Hunter Expectations
 |
|

 |
Hunters should be physically fit when hunting in Alaska to
improve one’s success. It is not uncommon to lose a day or
two of hunting per week due to bad weather, as Alaska
weather dictates everyone's schedule. Big game animals in
Alaska make big targets but hunters should practice shooting
well in advance of their trip. Shooting distances on caribou
and moose are often 100-300 yards, and bear under 150 yards.
Hunters should practice their shooting skills, standing,
sitting, free hand, with shooting sticks or bi-pod, and
prone. Caribou and/or black bear hunts offer the highest
success rates followed by brown/grizzly bear, then moose.
Alaska Game Regulations require that all meat must be
removed to a "transportation point" before any antlers are
removed from a "kill site". A bull moose can yield upwards
of 800lbs of meat and a caribou 200lbs of meat. A wet brown
bear hide can weigh up to 150lbs. This requires hunters to
hunt within a reasonable distance of where an airplane can
land or a boat may be beached. Quality and quantity of game
vary greatly upon weather conditions and the timing of a
particular hunt. Please give us a call for specific details.

Special Equipment
 |
|
Hunters should bring
a warm compact sleeping bag (no down-filled
bags). A scoped rifle with scope covers sighted
in for 200 yards. Recommended minimum calibers
for caribou - 30/06, moose - .300 win mag, black
bear - .300 win mag, brown bear - .338 win mag,
and 1 1/2 boxes of ammunition (controlled
expansion bullets only - NO BALLISTIC TIP
BULLETS PLEASE!). Recommended hunting equipment
for guided, outfitted, and non-guided hunts
vary. For guided hunts, hunters should bring a
small flashlight with spare batteries, camera
and film, hunting and/or fishing licenses,
appropriate big game tags, folding lock blade
knife, high quality binoculars, reading
material, medications, toiletries, waterproof
hat and gloves, warm waterproof coat, light
vest, 2 medium weight shirts, 2 T-shirts, 2 pair
waterproof pants, 2 pair long underwear, 3 pair
warm socks, camp moccasins, hunting boots, hip
waders (ask your guide first), gaiters, belt,
hand towel, small duffels, locking hard gun case
with wheels, bug repellant, cash, credit cards,
driver's license, airline tickets, important
phone numbers, a physically fit body along with
a positive mental attitude. Hunter's travel
clothes along with hard gun case and any other
unnecessary gear will be left in Koliganek. Each
hunter will be allowed 55 lbs. of gear depending
on the hunter's body weight. This is for weight
and balance of the aircraft. For safety reasons
please do not bring any handguns or pepper
spray. Hunter's handguns are not allowed in our
camps unless it will be the primary weapon of
choice. A complete recommended gear list will be
mailed to each hunter well in advance of his/her
trip. |

Travel Tips
 |
|
Purchase your
airline ticket 3 months in advance. Be sure and
arrive at the airport far enough in advance of
your flight to clear security. Pack your gear in
soft duffle bags inside larger luggage that has
wheels that can be left in base camp. If your
schedule will allow, plan on arriving in
Anchorage one day ahead of your scheduled hunt
date in the event that your luggage gets lost.
This way your airline has enough time to locate
your luggage before you depart for Dillingham,
AK then on to meet us in Koliganek, AK. Get your
taxidermist's address so that you can ship your
trophies directly to them or their tannery of
choice. |

“I just wanted to write you and
tell you what a fantastic time I had on our guided Alaska hunt.
You and your staff are 100% of what you told us you were going
to do. We had an opportunity to go on a family hunt that was
going to be the highlight of our hunting lives and you made it
come true for us. Your camp gear and guides treated us better
than I could have imagined and I know that my brothers and dad
had the times of their lives hunting with you. I still can’t
believe that we were able to harvest 3 Alaskan brown bears in
the first 3 days of hunting. Doug and Lonnie, our guides, put
us on bears and were able to get all of us within 60 yards
before we shot. I know that we have had plenty of conversations
about our hunting experience and we are still just elated about
how everything took place. I can’t wait to go out hunting again
with Magnum Guide Service and I highly recommend that anyone
looking for a guide service to book immediately for their hunt
of a lifetime with Jim Roche and his staff. Thanks again, Jim,
for making the family hunt a great time for all of us.”

“It is hard to put into words the incredible experience I recently had in Alaska. During our hunt we experienced all the elements of a great hunt. Some of which were not in our favor. Spending time in the field with Jim was a great learning experience for me. Jim’s knowledge of the area, weather, game and hunting skills was remarkable. The countless hours of scouting and preparation before my arrival is why the hunt was such a success. Melony made me feel so at home even though we were out in the middle of nowhere. Although I have hunted with Magnum before, it was great to get to know you both better. I’m looking forward to next year’s caribou hunt. Thank you for a great hunt, great food, great friendship and an awesome trophy moose!”
