Special Equipment

Hunters should have a rifle of .270 caliber or larger using 130 grain bullets or heavier.  Guns should have quality scopes of not less than 6 power and sighted in for dead on at 200 yards. High quality binoculars are very necessary and a spotting scope is helpful since many bucks are spotted over a mile away. Warm quiet clothing, camera, video camera, scope covers, ice chest, hunting license, flashlight, and personal effects, etc.

Other Hunting Opportunities

Night-time predator hunting for fox, bobcat, coyote, and mountain lion.  Also javelina and Free-Ranging Aoudad Sheep hunts.  All hunts are based upon availability.

Travel Tips

Van Horn area hunters who wish to fly in commercially should make arrangements to fly into the El Paso, TX airport.  There they can rent a car and drive approximately 2 hours east to the ranch headquarters. Those who drive in can do so in either a truck or passenger car since the road to the ranch headquarters is well maintained.  Amarillo area hunters should fly into Amarillo International Airport where we will provide free transfers to the ranch.   Click here to view some of our locations.

Aoudad sheep hunters will especially enjoy hunting our new 35,000 acre Amarillo Ranch or our 100,000 acre West Texas Ranch, for it will be exactly like hunting Desert Big Horn Sheep without the high price tag!  Lots of fun 4 wheeling, walking, stalking, and glassing through a spotting scope to pick out the largest ram.

"Hunter and guide stalk to within 200-400 yards and take a careful rest. The herd ram is nestled atop the large boulders that line the rim of the Palo Duro Canyon. At the shot the ram buckles and the "whomp" of bullet striking flesh ricochets off the canyon walls.  Dust, dirt and rock violently erupt as the bullet passes through. You watch helplessly in awe as gravity yanks your trophy toward the valley floor 600 feet below. Suddenly your stomach becomes queasy as you hear the sharp "whack" of your ram’s horns against solid rock as he plunges downward, crashing repeatedly totally out of control. The eternal moment climaxes as your ram slides to an abrupt halt in a spectacular cloud of dust and shale."

"I had a great time on my hunt and wanted to let you know that Gerald was an excellent host and a work horse.  I hunted with him for 4 days and he never slowed down.  When I book a hunt again with you guys I hope to be able to hunt with him.  Thank you for some great memories."
Joe Shortino, Austin, TX

"Best wishes for 2003!  This certainly was a great hunting year for me thanks to all of you.  As you recall I took a real nice gobbler in the spring.  The miss on the second bird was my fault only.  No one else was to blame.  Then it was on to New Mexico for a super antelope hunt where a really nice 16" buck was taken.  That was only exceeded in my thoughts by the harvesting of a 13 point, 26" outside beam spread muledeer in west Texas.  Again, I appreciate Magnum Guide Service for all it stands for and does.  Only the best!"
Dr. David Frederick, Lititz, PA

"Thank you Jim for making a lifelong dream come true on our muledeer hunt!  It will be hard to top that hunt, but I would like to try!"

Simon Griffin, NC

"Once again we all had a great time.  I just wanted to thank you and Mel and the whole Magnum staff for always going out of the way to make us feel like we are gold.  I don't believe there is anything else you all could do to make our trip more enjoyable."
Bobby Campbell, SC

"Thinking over the eight years we've known each other so much has happened.  The ranch acreage in Texas alone has grown over 10X.  We've hunted four states together and I've been fortunate in both the experience and our friendship.  I have a trophy room of top class animals that few hunters ever see much less have the chance to harvest.  The constant in all of this is your tireless energies and dedication to give every client the most thoroughly planned and organized hunt possible.  Your investment in staff, equipment, and selection of sites and leases secured cannot be matched.  My skills have grown and developed with these experiences even if Jim does give me the "look" from time to time.  It's all made me a better hunter.  I hope other hunters continue to share similar experiences and your friendship, even if it means I have to book earlier too."
Lew Miller, Plano, TX
