Bill asks:
My plans for future hunts include Kudu, Sable, Blue and Black Wildebeest and Waterbuck. All large African animals. There are other animals I want to hunt but these are the biggest. Do you think I should get a 338 Ultra Mag? I know shot placement is the most important thing.

The .338 RUM is a excellent choice if recoil is not an issue. The standard .338 Win Mag is also a good choice with 225 gr. controlled expansion bullets. Another to consider is the .300 RUM with 200 gr Barnes Triple Shock bullets. Good Hunting!

Heavy for caliber 30's with quality bullets will handle your list with no problem. (30-06 and larger) as will the .338 Win The RUM's OR 375 HH for that matter. I suggest striking the best balance between power and how well you shoot a given caliber.

I have killed several of each of the animals you list except the Sable - only one of those.
A 300 WM is all that is needed for the animals you list.
A 338 will work but is larger than needed.
