Texas Rio Grande Turkey Hunting

Texas is home to over 600,000 Rio Grande turkeys found primarily throughout the Texas "Hill Country" and "Edwards Plateau." Small pockets of birds are also found in both Northern & Southern Texas. The majority of land in Texas is privately owned whereby Landowners and Land Managers, along with TPWD Technical Guidance biologist's work together in managing and preserving such wonderful natural resources as the Rio Grande Turkey. Combine this along with lengthy spring and fall hunting seasons, generous bag limits, affordable pricing, mild weather, discounted hunting licenses for "young hunters" and beautiful scenery, help make Texas one of the top "turkey hunting destinations" in North America. Come see why so many Sportsmen, Sportswomen, and Young Hunters alike, enjoy such high success rates while hunting Texas' Rio Grande Gobblers!

Come Hunt With Us

Jim began hunting turkeys in the Spring of 1976 when the Texas season first opened. He has since hunted them for 32 consecutive years. Over the past 22 years Magnum has professionally guided over 1,800 turkey hunts for these elusive birds with an average s uccess rate of 1.7 birds per hunter, based upon a 2 bird limit. Our staff of guides have called in hundreds of birds for our clients.

An average Rio Grande gobbler weighs 20 lbs. and has a beard length of 9 1/2 inches. We have approximately 100,000 acres for our spring turkey hunters. The ranches that we hunt are vast in size with one as large as 21,000 acres, while most average 5,000 acres in size. Each trip is 3 days in length and we only hunt our pastures from 1 to 3 times out of the entire 6 week season. This allows our birds not to become call shy and unhuntable for our clients. Hunters should hear anywhere from 10-20 different gobblers per day.

Hunting Methods

After a delicious "full" breakfast, and well before "first light," our staff of expert guides escort both "semi-guided" and "fully-guided" hunters into the field. Hunters are placed within "calling distance" of both roost, strut zone, and feeding areas where they will be free to "run and gun" or "sit and stick" depending upon each hunter's preference. We turkey hunt 4-5 hours then return to the Lodge for a big lunch and a short nap. Hunters who wish to hunt all day can be accommodated. Late morning and early afternoon can be one of the very best times to hear an adult gobbler "sounding off" to attract a lonesome hen to his side. Then it's back to the "turkey woods" for another 4-5 hours of afternoon "gobbling action." Hunts can consist of a fair amount of walking and calling to "raise" a bird then setting up on him as the distance between hunter and quarry closes. Hunters may also enjoy success hunting along popular travel corridors between known roosts and both feeding and watering areas. Hunting along ridges can also be productive since hunters are elevated and can better hear distant gobbles. Wise turkey hunters who utilize binoculars may also view strutting gobblers. With our expansive landholdings encompassing nearly 100,000 private acres, our hunters enjoy the privacy and luxury of having 400-1500 acres exclusively to themselves for each morning and afternoon hunt. If our hunters ever choose to be moved to a new and "fresh" hunting area they will be accommodated. Many times individual groups of hunters can have their own ranches to hunt away from other hunters and in some instances larger corporate groups may have the entire lodge and ranch to themselves. Hunting "pairs" such as husband/wife, father/son, friend/friend will be accommodated.

What Is Furnished

We offer several different spring and fall turkey hunting packages. The majority of our turkey hunts include 3 nights, food, lodging, guides and 2 1/2 days of hunting for 1-3 Rio Grande gobblers, airport transfers from the nearest airport, and complete freezer facilities. Guided hunts are one guide per one hunter. Semi-guided hunts include a guide to transport hunters into the field and place them in areas where gobblers frequent and/or roost. Both guided and semi-guided hunts are conducted on the same ranches showing no favoritism. "Do It Yourself" hunts are where hunter furnishes their own food & lodging (motel or RV). Turkey decoys, Double Bull pop-up blinds, shotguns, ammunition, snake leggings, and folding chairs may be available for rent. Successful "Rio Grande Gobbler Hunters" will receive a "Magnum Guide Service, LLC" "Certificate of Harvest" worthy of framing at the completion of their trip. We also have a fun "Magnum" Awards Presentation that has really been a big hit! We hope you will come join in the celebration at "Team Magnum!"

What Is Not Furnished

Personal hunting equipment, gratuities for the staff, adult "spirits" and wine beverages, decoys, personal hunting license, shipping of trophies and transportation before and after the scheduled hunt.

"I just had to write a quick note to see how everyone is doing, send you a couple of pictures, and let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at the Main Lodge.  Everyone there was so nice and friendly, they made you feel right at home.  The rooms were great and the meals were nothing less than great.  Jordyn and I really enjoyed the time we spent with Donnie driving around the ranch scouting out the wildlife, and all the guys from Mississippi and Alabama were a lot of fun to spend time with.  I really enjoyed the time I got to spend out hunting turkeys with Jordyn and it was very important to me that he could hunt with a guide service that he could judge future trips by.  I truly think that I made the right choice with Magnum.  Your service and hospitality were so much higher than I was used to.  It was the best trip I have ever been on.  There are two words that will sum it up "World Class".  When I look to book the muledeer hunt I have always wanted to go on, I will look no further than Magnum Guide Service.  Feel free to use me as a reference.  You guys are great!  Thought you would enjoy seeing a couple of guys enjoying their time in Texas.  Jordyn was really relaxing after he got his second bird!  Thanks again,
Bruce & Jordyn Lautenslager, MI
